This Week in Bearcat Athletics: Volume 22

GREENWOOD - The second ranked wrestling team won the NCAA Super Region II title in dominating fashion on Saturday and saw nine wrestlers qualify for the National Championship. Men's basketball gets the postseason started Thursday in Augusta.

Tickets for all home events will be $5 with kids 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. All Lander students and faculty/staff will be admitted free of charge after presenting a valid Lander ID. No pets are allowed in any game facility unless they are ADA certified with their paperwork.

Last time out
The men's basketball team finished the regular season with a 1-1 week. Lander beat Young Harris on Wednesday on Senior Day 83-53 while losing to Flagler 73-70 to close out the regular season.
Nigel Colvin hit eight 3-pointers against the Mountain Lions while Jacob Cooper added 21 points.
In the loss to Flagler, Dominic Stanford and Cooper led the Bearcats in scoring with 16 points. Navaughn Maise added 12 points and hauled in nine rebounds.

What's on tap
Lander will travel to Augusta, Ga., to battle in the PBC Tournament as the No. 4 seed where they will face No. 5 Young Harris in the quarterfinals.
Last time out
For the first time in program history, the No. 2 Lander wrestling team has taken home the Super Region II title after blitzing past the competition with 164 team points.
The Bearcats saw nine wrestlers qualify for the Div. II National Championship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa., on March 10 and 11.
After Lander's 164 team score, the next closest team was Mount Olive's 115. Newberry College rounded out the top three with 111.5 points.

The Bearcats also set a new scoring record at the Super Region II championships with their 164-team score.
The Bearcats have increased the number of wrestlers they've sent to the National Championships each year. 2021 saw two wrestlers qualify while 2022 saw four.
Lander finished Super Regionals with nine national qualifiers, seven Super Region championships, one second-place finish and one third-place finish.

Last time out
The Women’s Basketball team finished their season last week going 1-1, dropping their last home game to Young Harris before fighting off an 18-point comeback from the Flagler Saints to win 67-66 in overtime. Jakiyah Parker was fouled with under ten seconds left and hit two free throws to give the Bearcats the win.

Last time out
The Lander men's lacrosse team battled their way to a tough 9-7 win over regional foe North Greenville on Saturday at Van Taylor Stadium with Brandon Perkins and Nolan Oakey both scoring three goals each in the win.
The Bearcats were led in scoring by Perkins and Oakey with three goals while Oakey would lead the Bearcats in points with four. Oakey also was the leader in ground balls with six while Jake Watson collected five ground balls after winning 11 face-offs. Four Bearcats were tied for the lead in caused turnovers with two each.

The Bearcats travel to Savannah, Ga., for a neutral site contest against Embry-Riddle of the Sunshine State Conference for its next test on Friday, March 3 for a 7 pm start.
Last time out
The Lander baseball team went 1-4 this past week while finishing its series with No. 5 Columbus State with a 13-10 win on Sunday.
Ethan Wilder led the Bearcats with four hits and five RBI. Wilder was a home run short of the cycle against the Cougars on Sunday. Landon Dupert and Tyler Prell joined Wilder with multiple hits on Sunday.

Lander heads to Francis Marion on Tuesday and then Georgia Southwestern for a PBC series this weekend.
Last Time Out
The Bearcats went 1-1 last week, including a 5-2 victory against Emmanuel. Chiara Gerbino, Maranda Adair, and Mille Elsborg secured three team points in straight sets that match during Singles. Lander fell to Belmont Abbey last Saturday in a close 3-4 match.

Lander will host Francis Marion on Thursday, March 2nd at 2:00 PM. Women’s tennis follows up that match with a Peach Belt battle at Augusta the next day at 1:00 PM.
Last Time Out
#12 Men’s tennis is now 7-0 after dominating in two performances last week. The Bearcats welcomed Emmanuel to town last Wednesday and tamed the Lions in a 7-0 rout. They also earned their first conference win this season on Sunday, beating Augusta 6-1. Alexandre Crepy and Hugo Regner are 7-0 and 6-0 in Singles respectively.

The Bearcats have two matches this week, starting with a home game against Emmanuel on Wednesday, Feb. 22nd at 2:00 pm. Lander will take the court again on Sunday, Feb. 26th at 1:00 pm to open conference play against Augusta.
Last time out
The softball team opened up Peach Belt play by sweeping Augusta this past weekend. The Bearcats won game one 7-4 and game two 3-2. In the final game, Lander erased a 6-0 deficit and a walk off home run by Barbara Cook gave the Bearcats a 7-6 win.

The Bearcats host North Greenville Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 PM and then host USC Beaufort in a conference series beginning Friday.
Last time out
The Women’s Lacrosse team went 1-1 last week as they took down Anderson 16-5 on Wednesday behind six goals from Alyssa Suchan. The Bearcats then dropped their first game of the season on Saturday as they fell 15-5 to #12 Wingate.

Acrobatics & Tumbling slayed another ranked opponent, defeating #14 Presbyterian 255.195-247.700. Their highest heat scores came in the Compulsory and Pyramid Events where they earned 9.75 three times. Lander is now 3-0 for the first time in program history.
