Gordon Scores 24, Parker Hits Winning Free Throws as Lander Takes Down Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Jakiyah Parker was fouled with five seconds left in overtime and would hit two free throws to give Lander a 67-66 win over the Flagler Saints in the Bearcats final game of the season Saturday afternoon.

The win snapped an eight game losing streak for the Bearcats who finished the season at 8-19 and 5-13 in PBC play. The Saints fell to 6-22 and 3-15 in PBC play to end their season.

Tanyia Gordon led the way with 24 points, the most by any Bearcat this season. She also added nine rebounds and five steals. Jakiyah Parker would get her 11th and 12th points of the game off the aforementioned game-winning free throws.

Kayla Sanders would add nine rebounds of her own in her final game of her career, tying Gordon for the team lead.

Flagler opened the game on a 6-2 run but it would be the last lead they would hold for a while as a 9-0 Lander run aided by a Jakiyah Parker three would flip the score line and give the Bearcats a 10-6 lead into the media timeout. However, Lander would get only one bucket from that timeout to the end of the quarter on a Jasmine Grant layup. Meanwhile, Flagler would score six points to tie the game heading into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Lander would shoot almost 50% from the floor and go 4-7 from three with buckets from Parker, Quadaija Langley, and two from Cory Santoro coming from beyond the arc.

Flagler would tie the game up at 16 a piece with just under 7:30 left but Lander would close the quarter on a 20-8 run to open up a 36-24 lead heading into halftime.

The Blue and Gold would open the quarter on a 10-4 run capped by a Gordon layup to extend the lead to 18, a lead which would end up being the biggest of the game. Flagler would cut into the lead some but Lander would still hold a 14 point lead heading into the fourth quarter at 48-34.

In the fourth quarter, Flagler would shoot over 60% from the field and would slowly cut away at the Lander lead. The Saints would get the lead down to single digits at 48-39 before a Tyasia Freeman free throw would restore a ten point lead. However, the Saints would be relentless as they would continue to chisel away at the Lander lead before a three pointer from Sharale McCormick would tie the game with just over a minute left.

Flagler would take their first lead of the game since early in the first quarter off a Jessica Dowdy layup but Quadaija Langley would find that late game magic she had during Lander's four-game winning streak as she would hit a layup with 24 seconds left to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the extra period, Lander would get an early four point lead off buckets from Parker and Freeman but Flagler would go on a 6-2 run to take a one-point lead at 66-65 with just over 90 seconds to go. Both teams would have good chances for the next minute but couldn't convert but Jakiyah Parker would take a rebound off a missed layup and go coast to coast and would get fouled and have a chance to give the Bearcats the win at the free throw line. The senior would knock down both free throws and Flagler's last second chance fell short to give the Bearcats the win.

Lander now sets their sights on the 2023-24 season where they are set to only lose two players to graduation.
