GREENWOOD – Although leading 4-3 after the seventh inning, the Lander baseball team would fall 9-4 to No. 12 Wingate at Dolny Stadium Tuesday evening.
Lander drops to 3-8 overall while Wingate advances to 9-3 overall.
Lander would be the first to strike as the first run of the game came on a solo shot from Will McClellan to left field in the fourth inning.
With the bases loaded and with two outs in the fifth, Ian Jenkins would sail a high fly ball that would be dropped by the Bulldogs' third baseman to score Matthew Burgess and Chris Manriquez to put the Bearcats up 3-0.
Wingate would plate three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game 3-3.
Jenkins would be responsible for more runs for Lander in the eighth. Jenkins would send a screamer out to left field that would score Oliver Zohn from first. Jenkins, who had a double, would be thrown out at third trying to stretch the double to a triple.
Wingate would smash a grand slam to right field to take the lead back in the top of the eighth. An RBI single and a passed ball allowed two more runs to come home as the Bulldogs took a 9-4 lead.
Neither side would score in the ninth.
Bennett Nance got the start for the Bearcats. Nance went three innings where he allowed just one hit and struck out two. Tyler Olverholt picked up the loss. He pitched 1.1 innings where he allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out and walking two. Dawson Campbell, Zach Pellegrino and Matthew Ellis all saw relief appearances as well.
Lander returns to Dolny Stadium for a PBC series against No. 6 Columbus State starting on Friday, February 24.
