Suchan’s Seven Goals Lead Bearcats in Domination of Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. - Alyssa Suchan scored seven goals on seven shots on goal as the Lander Women's Lacrosse Team scored ten goals in the first half to help pull away from the Anderson Trojans, 16-5.

With the win, the Bearcats improved to a perfect 3-0 to start the 2023 season while Anderson dropped to 2-1 in their inaugural campaign.

The seven goals ties the program record for goals in a game set by Suchan in 2021 against Montevallo and tied by Mickey Burnett last season against Limestone.

Emmy Peterson also recorded a hat trick of her own and added an assist on one of Suchan's goals.

Lander would strike quickly as Ella Benson would score a goal within the first minute of action off the draw control from Izzy Olson. Benson would come close to her second goal a couple of minutes later but would hit the post and Alyssa Suchan would pick up the ground ball and slot home the goal to double Lander's lead at 2-0.

Anderson would cut the lead in half but Lander would rattle off four straight goals after that. Brooke Kelly would slot home the first off a free position shot, Mickey Burnett would add to the tally before Suchan would get her second capitalizing on a man up opportunity. Peterson would close out the scoring run for the Bearcats before it was snapped by the Trojans capitalizing on a man up opportunity of their own to cut the lead to 6-2. However, right before the quarter horn, Emmy Peterson would slot home a free position goal to restore the five goal lead at 7-2 after 15 minutes of action.

The second quarter would see Lander get two goals from Suchan and another from Kasey Bronco while the Bearcat defense would keep the Trojan offense off the scoreboard. The second goal from Suchan came as the horn sounded off the assist from Mary Claire Robinson to give Lander a 10-2 lead heading into halftime.

Anderson would score two of the first three goals of the second half sandwiching a Suchan goal off a Peterson assist but Lander would respond with another four goal run. Brooke Kelly would assist Alyssa Suchan twice and Ella Benson and Mickey Burnett would each add free position goals. Anderson would add a goal right before the end of the quarter but Lander would still possess a ten goal lead at 15-5 heading into the last quarter of action.

In the third quarter, Taryn Samons would relieve Kara Krusbe in net and would record two saves in the fourth quarter as Lander would keep Anderson off the scoreboard once again while Suchan would add her seventh goal of the night to give Lander the 16-5 win.

The Bearcats return home to Van Taylor Stadium on Saturday as they play host to the 12th-ranked Wingate Bulldogs. That game is scheduled to start at 4:00 PM.
