GREENWOOD - The Lander Women's Lacrosse team fell behind early as the 12th-ranked Wingate Bulldogs opened a 7-2 lead in the first half and the Bearcats could never gain any momentum as the Bulldogs would pull away for a 15-5 win on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Van Taylor Stadium.
Alyssa Suchan and Mickey Burnett each would have two goals a piece and Emmy Peterson would add another one of her own for the Lander offense.
Kara Krusbe made 11 saves in the cage for the Bearcats.
Nine different players would score for Wingate led by Leah Knowles with four goals, going four for five in free position opportunities.
Wingate would get out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter as Lander could only get off three shots but all three would force a save from Wingate goalie Megan Biase.
The Bearcats would strike first in the second quarter as a miss from Kasey Bronco would be recycled and find Alyssa Suchan who would slot home the opening goal for the Blue and Gold.Â
Kara Krusbe would save a Wingate shot to spark an offensive break for the Bearcats that resulted in a free position attempt for Suchan who would find the back of the cage to make it 4-2 in favor of the visitors.
Unfortunately, Wingate would score the next three goals to take a 7-2 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter would have the same pattern as the first as the Bearcats couldn't find the back of the cage while the Bulldogs would beat Krusbe five times to increase their lead to 12-2 going to the last 15 minutes of action.
Emmy Peterson would get on the board within the first minute of the fourth quarter off a free position opportunity. However, a 3-0 scoring run from Wingate would put the game out of reach for good.
The Bearcats would get two late goals from
Mickey Burnett to give the game the 15-5 scoreline that it finished with.
The Blue and Gold are back at home on Wednesday as they host Limestone for a 7:00 PM start time.
