Baseball takes down No. 5 Columbus State 13-10 to conclude the series

GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team avoided a series sweep of No. 5 Columbus State after a 13-10 win over the Cougars at Dolny Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Lander moves to 4-10 overall and 3-3 in the PBC while Columbus State drops to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the PBC.

Ethan Wilder led the Bearcats with four hits and five RBI. Wilder was a home run short of the cycle against the Cougars on Sunday. Landon Dupert and Tyler Prell joined Wilder with multiple hits on the day.

The Cougars would plate two runs in the top of the first before the Bearcats would put together a five-run inning in the bottom of the first.

After Jackson Hoshour singled and stole second, an RBI single from Landon Dupert brought Hoshour home to score to make it 2-1.

Matthew Burgess would come up to the plate later in the inning with the bases loaded and brought in the tying run after getting hit by a pitch. A wild pitch would score Landon Dupert from third to give Lander a 3-2 lead.

Dalton Stroud would push the Bearcats' advantage to three as an infield single helped bring home Burgess and Tyler Prell to put Lander in front 5-2.

Columbus State would strike back in the second inning as a pair of RBI singles brought the Cougars within a run of the Bearcats.

Lander would also see runs come in the second.

Wilder would send a missile that bounced off the right field fence to score Dupert and Will McClellan while Prell slapped a single through the left side to score Wilder later in the inning to give Lander an 8-4 lead.

The third inning would be the first inning where neither team was able to score.

Columbus State would get a run in the top of the fourth off an RBI triple to move the score to 8-5. A ground out to Burgess later in the inning would bring home a run from third to get Columbus within two runs of Lander.

The Bearcats got their offense surging in the bottom of the fourth as Wilder sent a triple out to right field to Droze and McClellan before Prell sailed a single out to right field to give Lander an 11-6 lead.

The fifth would be a silent inning for both the Bearcats and Cougars.

Columbus State scored a run in the sixth off a home run to right field.

Droze would score the first of two runs in the bottom of the sixth, as he sent a single to left field to score McClellan while Wilder sent a single up the middle to score Dupert to give Lander a 13-7 advantage.

Columbus State would score three runs in the top of the ninth but would be unable to take the final game of the series.

Cooper king got the start and earned his second win of the season. King went five innings where he allowed six runs on eight hits. Bennett Nance pitched the remaining four innings where he allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four to earn the save.

Lander hits the road on Tuesday as it faces former PBC foe Francis Marion for a 4 pm start.
