GREENWOOD - Lander scored six runs in the third inning and held on for a 7-4 victory over Augusta in the team's Pach Belt Softball series-opening game.
In the bottom of the third, Naya Jones and Rylee Omahen singled with one out. After a walk to Saje Jones loaded the bases, Abbie Behe doubled off the centerfield wall to score two. Logan Coward singled through the left side to score Saje Jones and make it 3-0. Barbara Cook then blasted a three-run home run to double the Bearcats' lead.
The Jaguars made it a 6-2 game with a two-run home run in the fourth. The score remained 6-2 until the bottom of the sixth when Lander took advantage of two Augusta errors to make it 7-2. The Jaguars would score two runs in the seventh to make it a three-run game, but Taylor Scott recorded her sixth strikeout to end the game and give Lander the win.
Rylee Omahen was 2-3 with a run scored, while Gracie Derrick was 2-3 to lead the Lander offense. Cook, Logan Coward, and Behe drove in six of Lander's seven runs. Taylor Scott (3-3) picked up the win allowing four runs on eight hits, and struck out six in the complete game effort.
The two teams will wrap up their series with a double header starting at 1:00 PM tomorrow.
