The following season, the Bearcats set a then-school record for wins with 38 and advanced to the NCAA Southeast Regional for the first time in school history.

Smith's 2014 squad would go down in the record books as one of the greatest teams in school history. Lander finished with a school record of 52 wins, won the South Atlantic Regional, and advanced to the NCAA College World Series for the first time in program history. The Bearcats finished the season ranked No. 4 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and finished 27-3 on their home field while leading Division II in home runs and runs scored.

In his final season leading the Bearcats, the team finished 44-16 and advanced to the World Series for the second time in three seasons.
