Week in review

The Lander men’s soccer team defeated Flagler College 1-0 in the PBC Finals on Sunday to claim its sixth tournament title in program history. A Jed Smith header in the 18th minute off a corner kick from Kevin Rubaszewski was the only goal of the game.

Week in review

The Bearcats went 2-0 last week, locking up at least a second place finish in the conference and a chance to still win the league. On Friday Lander dominated Georgia College 3-0 on Senior Night.  Saturday, the team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Young Harris 3-2.

Lander hits the road tomorrow in their regular season finale as they travel to take on Augusta in a battle for first place in the Conference. Then the Bearcats will turn their attention to the PBC Championship beginning next week.

The Lander Men’s Rugby Team had their game at UNC postponed last week.

The Bearcats are scheduled to face Belmont Abbey at home on Saturday for a noon kickoff. Follow @LanderMRugby on social media for any schedule updates.

Field Hockey went 1-1 over the last week.

On Tuesday, Lander defeated Coker 3-1 on Senior Day. Sophie Schmitz scored two of the goals and assisted on the other. Schmitz has contributed to the last eight goals that the Bearcats have scored and is second in the conference in most offensive categories.

On Saturday, the Bearcats fell to #7 Mount Olive in a non-conference game by a score of 2-0. The Trojans scored in the second quarter and sealed the game with a goal later in the fourth to snap Lander’s three-game winning streak.

What's on tap

The Lander Field Hockey Team will play their last game of the season on Friday as they will travel to Gaffney, S.C. to take on the Limestone Saints in a win-and-in situation. The winner of that game will earn the third and final spot in the Mountain Division in the SAC Tournament. The first-round opponent will be Belmont Abbey as the Crusaders have locked up the two seed in the Piedmont Division.

Last time out

Lander’s JV team competed in the UNG Fall Invitational in Dahlonega, Ga. on Oct. 31-Nov. 1. There were only five teams competing, four of them were ‘B’ Teams. The Bearcats shot 932 (318+310+304) in the tournament. Charlie Beiers had a top-10 performance, shooting 225 for a ninth-place tie. This completes the Fall season for men’s golf.

 #19 Women’s golf finished 13th at the Rollins Legends Invitational on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in Bradenton, Fla. Lander shot 921 (302+308+311) against ranked competition. Kajsa Lindqvist tied for 16th for the highest Bearcat finish. Lindqvist shot 10-over-par through three rounds. A second team competed in the Converse Fall Women’s Invite on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 as well. Due to rain, only one round was completed between all teams. Lander finished fourth, with Chloe Hiott and Alayna Fortenberry both tying for eighth at seven-over-par. The Fall season has officially wrapped up for the Bearcats.

Last time out

The Lander Women’s Cross Country Team participated in the PBC Cross Country Championships on Saturday and placed eighth in the field.

Senior Mia Crankfield led the Bearcats and was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

Senior Missy O’Toole was awarded with the Elite 16 Award after the race. The Elite 16 Award recognizes the athlete with the highest GPA at the championship site.

The Women’s Cross Country Team is back in action in two weeks as they will travel to Charlotte, N.C. to participate in the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.

After finishing the 2021-22 season in a nail-biting loss to nationally ranked Flagler College in the PBC semifinals, the Lander men’s basketball team will begin the season with a pair of home contests on Friday and Saturday. Lander will welcome Southern Wesleyan, Anderson (S.C.) and Flagler to Horne Arena this weekend. Lander went 0-2 against Southern Wesleyan last season while falling to Anderson 76-71 in overtime last season. Lander will face Anderson on November 11 and Southern Wesleyan on November 12.

After sending four wrestlers to the 2022 NCAA Div. II National Championships and seeing Zeth Brower become the program’s first-ever All-American and National Champion, the Lander wrestling team begins the 2022-23 season on the road at King. Lander defeated King at Horne Arena 22-20 last season.

The Bearcats were picked to finish fifth in the Peach Belt this season.  Lander begins the season this weekend as they will take on Carson-Newman on Saturday and Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday in Aiken, S.C.
