Three Early Goals Lead Bearcats over Cobras on Senior Day

GREENWOOD - The Lander Field Hockey Team sent their senior, Kelsey Gibbons, out in style on Tuesday afternoon as they used three goals in the first half to build a lead over the Coker Cobras that they would not relinquish as the Bearcats would hold on for a 3-1 win. The win gives the team their first three game win streak in program history and moves them to 7-6 overall and 5-6 in SAC play.

Lander would strike first and quickly as Sophie Schmitz, who was just named SAC Offensive player of the week that morning, would score her fourth consecutive goal 41 seconds in to give Lander a 1-0 lead. They would double their lead under two minutes later as Schmitz would be involved again, this time finding Lauren Punt on a breakaway for her fourth goal of the season to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead after the first quarter of action. 

Late in the 20th minute, Schmitz would score again this time off the assist from Puck Boschma to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead. Coker would only get three shots the entire half but would convert on their third shot of the game right before the halftime horn to cut the lead to 3-1. 

The game would be scoreless in the second half. However, after that the Bearcats would be on the front foot the rest of the game as they would outshoot the Cobras 10-1 and would force seven saves, including one defensive save. However they couldn't convert their chances but it wouldn't matter as the Bearcats defense was a brick wall and stopped the Cobra attack multiple times before they had a chance to take a shot. 

Lander is back in action this Saturday as they will travel to take on the seventh-ranked Mount Olive Trojans who are top of the conference. That game is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
