Lander Dispatches Wingate, 2-0

GREENWOOD - Goals from Floor Mulder and Lily Drijftholt propelled the Lander field hockey team to a 2-0 win over Wingate on Tuesday evening in front of an energetic crowd of 213 at Frank Hill Stadium.

The victory marked the second 2-0 win for the Bearcats (8-4, 6-2 SAC) over the Bulldogs (3-9, 3-7 SAC) this season, with the Blue and Gold having defeated Wingate in North Carolina earlier this year. It was also Lander's fourth consecutive win in the series and seventh in eight all-time meetings between the two fifth-year programs.

As they did Saturday against Coker, the Bearcats dominated offensively, holding a 17-2 advantage in shots, including a 7-1 edge in shots on goal.

After Ollie Bond and Leira Van Tilburg were denied in the first quarter by Wingate goalkeeper Colleen Emanuele, Bond helped break the scoreless tie in the second quarter. The junior inserted a penalty corner to Mulder, who ripped a slap shot into the back of the cage midway through the period to give Lander a 1-0 lead that it carried into halftime.

The goal was Mulder's second of the season, with both coming against Wingate, while Bond recorded her team-leading fourth assist of the year.

The Bearcats continued to control the game after the break, holding Wingate without a shot throughout the second half. Lander generated four shots in the third quarter but could not extend its lead, sending the game into the final 15 minutes with the Bearcats still holding a one-goal advantage.

With the crowd of 213 encouraging the Bearcats to find an insurance goal, Lander finally broke through again with just over two minutes remaining. Mickey Bond drove toward the cage before sending a pass to Drijftholt, who poked the ball past Emanuele to seal the 2-0 victory.

The goal was Drijftholt's third of the season, moving the freshman into a tie for the team lead in goals, while Mickey Bond recorded her second assist of the year.

Maddie White and Avery Tworkoski split time in goal, combining for Lander's seventh shutout of the season. Tworkoski made the Bearcats' lone save as the Lander defense limited Wingate to just two shots and none over the final 30 minutes.

Lander will hit the road for the first time in two weeks Saturday when the Bearcats travel to Belmont, N.C., to face Belmont Abbey at 1 p.m.

The matchup carries significant postseason implications as Lander sits just half a game behind the Crusaders, who enter the contest with a 7-2 SAC record. The result could play a key role in determining which team earns the No. 2 seed and the final bye into the semifinals of the South Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Championship.
