Lander Closes Out One Shutout Win, Earns Another on Senior Day

GREENWOOD - The Lander field hockey team closed out a shutout victory in a resumed game against Coker on Saturday afternoon before blanking the Cobras again in the teams' regularly scheduled South Atlantic Conference matchup on Senior Day at Frank Hill Stadium.

Across more than 76 minutes of action Saturday, the Bearcats outshot the Cobras 29-0, allowing just one penalty corner over the two contests.

Lander resumed its Sept. 22 matchup with Coker with 1:04 remaining in the third quarter and a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats registered three shots over the final 16:04, but Hayley Bernhardt's first career goal, scored in the 29th minute of the original contest, proved to be the difference as Lander secured the 1-0 victory.

Between games, Lander honored its four seniors — Avery Tworkoski, Mirte Van Roosebeke, Mickey Bond and Leira Van Tilburg — for their contributions to the program.

The Bearcats (7-4, 5-2 SAC) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second contest as Shannon MacAngus found the backboard exactly one minute into the game. The goal was MacAngus' third of the season and gave Lander an early 1-0 advantage.

Lander continued to pressure the Coker (2-10, 2-7 SAC) defense throughout the opening quarter, putting five more shots on frame but could not extend its lead. The Bearcats continued to control possession and generate scoring opportunities in the second quarter, but the Cobras' defense kept the deficit at one heading into halftime.

The story remained much the same in the third quarter as Lander continued to create chances but could not find the backboard, carrying its narrow advantage into the final 15 minutes.

The Bearcats finally broke through again in the 48th minute when Mickey Bond sent a lob into the circle that found the stick of Avrie Arnfeldt. The sophomore redirected the ball into the cage for her second goal of the season, doubling Lander's lead to 2-0 at the 47:28 mark.

Lander finished the second contest with a 26-0 advantage in shots, including a 16-0 edge in shots on goal. Coker goalkeeper Kylie Campbell made 12 saves, while the Cobras also recorded two defensive saves.

Tworkoski capped her Senior Day with a shutout, her third of the season and Lander's sixth as a team. The senior goalkeeper did not face a shot in the contest as the Bearcats' defense kept the Cobras from generating a scoring opportunity.

Lander will continue its homestand Tuesday when the Bearcats welcome Wingate to Frank Hill Stadium for the teams' second meeting of the season. The contest is scheduled for 7 p.m.
