Lander Sets New Single-Game Goal Mark in Win Over Barton

WILSON, N.C. - The Lander Field Hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as the Bearcats defeated Barton, 8-0, on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Truist Stadium.

The eight goals set a new program record for goals in a game, breaking the previous mark of seven that Lander had reached three times, dating back to the program's first-ever win over Lincoln Memorial in 2022.

Six different players found the backboard, tying the program record for individual goal scorers in a game, a mark first established in a 6-2 win over Converse on Oct. 3, 2023. Four of those players also recorded their first career collegiate goals.

Lily Drijftholt opened the scoring for Lander (5-4, 3-2 SAC) in the ninth minute when a deflected cross found her stick, allowing the freshman to beat the Barton goalkeeper for the first goal of her collegiate career.

Just over a minute later, Avrie Arnfeldt found a wide-open Kirsten Schaberg at the back post, where Schaberg put the ball away for her first career goal to double the lead. The assist also marked Arnfeldt's first career collegiate point.

The Pennsylvania native then added her first career goal in the 13th minute, finishing off a pass from Puck Hoenderdos to give the Bearcats a 3-0 advantage heading into the second quarter.

The career firsts continued in the second quarter as Hoenderdos connected with Anneliese Harmon, who found the backboard for the first time in her collegiate career at the 19:26 mark. The goal gave Lander a 4-0 lead that it carried into halftime.

Lander wasted little time adding to its advantage after the break. Just 48 seconds into the third quarter, Leira Van Tilburg cut inside and found the backboard off an assist from Ollie Bond to push the lead to 5-0.

Harmon then struck for the second time in the contest in the 39th minute. With several players battling for possession in front of the Barton cage, Floor Mulder found Harmon in the middle of the scramble, allowing her to put the ball away and make it 6-0.

Mirte Van Roosebeke added the seventh goal in the 53rd minute, converting a penalty stroke for her second goal of the season. Both of Van Roosebeke's goals this year have come on penalty strokes, with her first coming against Slippery Rock on Sept. 12.

Drijftholt capped the record-setting afternoon with just 19 seconds remaining. A Lander penalty corner sent the ball into a crowd of players in front of the cage, where the freshman was able to slot it home for her second goal of the afternoon and the Bearcats' eighth of the game.

Lander dominated the offensive opportunities, holding a 24-2 advantage in shots, including a 16-0 edge in shots on goal. Barton (1-8, 0-6 SAC) was held without a shot through the first three quarters, while Maddie White and Avery Tworkoski combined for the shutout in goal.

The Bearcats will have a full week off before returning to Frank Hill Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 17, for a unique doubleheader against Coker.

The two teams will first resume their Sept. 22 contest, which was suspended due to weather with 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter and Lander holding a 1-0 lead. Following the conclusion of the suspended game and a short break, the Bearcats and Cobras will play their originally scheduled contest. Action is set to begin at noon.
