Lander Falls to No. 4 Newberry, 2-0

GREENWOOD - A strong defensive effort through three quarters was not enough for the Lander Field Hockey team as two fourth-quarter goals lifted fourth-ranked Newberry to a 2-0 win on Tuesday evening at Frank Hill Stadium.

Lander (4-4, 2-2 SAC) had one of the best chances of the first half when Puck Hoenderdos found herself one-on-one with the Newberry goalkeeper on a breakaway, but the junior midfielder could not find the back of the cage as the game remained scoreless at halftime.

The Bearcats' defense held the Newberry (9-1, 6-0 SAC) offense, which entered the game averaging nearly 3.5 goals and 17 shots per game, to just five shots through the first three quarters. Avery Tworkoski made one save in the first quarter, while Bo Rouweler came up with a defensive save to help keep the Wolves off the scoreboard.

Newberry finally broke through 3:27 into the fourth quarter after a foul in the circle created some confusion on the restart. The ball was poked away on the ensuing free hit, and Wibien Dahmen quickly capitalized, finding the back of the cage at the 48:27 mark to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

Just over four minutes later, Newberry doubled its advantage when Amber Tozana received a cross from Karlijn Frenken. The ball found its way through several Lander sticks before Tozana was able to put it away at 52:41, giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The Bearcats were unable to answer in the final minutes as Newberry finished with a 10-4 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Maddie White made two saves in the second half for Lander.

The Bearcats hit the road Saturday, traveling to Barton for a 12:30 p.m. contest.
