No. 10 Lander Falls to No. 1 Shippensburg in Top-10 Season Opener

GREENWOOD – The 10th-ranked Lander field hockey team had a couple of chances late but couldn't crack the defense of top-ranked and defending national champion Shippensburg as the Blue and Gold fell 1-0 Saturday morning at Frank Hill Stadium.

The game, which was moved from Wingate, North Carolina, and pushed to an earlier start time due to the heat, marked the first matchup between the two programs.

The first half was a defensive battle, although the Raiders held a 5-1 advantage in shots. Shippensburg's first real chance came in the final 90 seconds of the half when a shot was saved by Avery Tworkoski. Another attempt was stopped on a defensive save by Mitre Van Roosebeke, but a penalty stroke was awarded on the play. Tworkoski came up with a diving save on the penalty stroke to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.

Shippensburg was awarded another penalty stroke 10 minutes into the third quarter, but Tworkoski was up to the task once again to keep the game scoreless. The Raiders finally broke through a couple of minutes later, finding the backboard off a penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead.

After being held to just one shot through the first three quarters, Lander had a chance early in the fourth when a cross from Avrie Arnfeldt was lifted just too high and sailed over the goal. Leira Van Tilburg had Lander's final chance of the game, but her attempt was blocked as the Raiders held on for the victory.

Lander hits the road next week, traveling to Frostburg State on Friday at 3 p.m. before heading to Slippery Rock on Saturday for a noon start.
