No. 9 Lander Overcomes Early 2-0 Deficit to Defeat Frostburg in Overtime

FROSTBURG, Md. – The ninth-ranked Lander field hockey team overcame an early 2-0 deficit and three separate one-goal deficits to defeat Frostburg State 4-3 in overtime Friday afternoon.

After Frostburg State scored twice in a three-minute span in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead, Lander scored three second-half goals to tie the game and set the stage for Ollie Bond to score the golden goal five and a half minutes into overtime, giving the Bearcats their first win of the season in the opening game of their annual northern road trip.

The win marked the third meeting between the Bearcats and Bobcats, with all three contests going to overtime.

Lander was slow to find its offensive rhythm in the first half, as Frostburg State held a 7-1 advantage in shots through the opening 30 minutes. The Bobcats broke through in the 18th minute before doubling their lead in the 21st minute to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

Lander came out of the break as the more aggressive team, and Shannon MacAngus scored the first goal of the season for the Blue and Gold to cut the deficit to one.

Frostburg State re-established its two-goal lead when it scored in the first minute of the third quarter, but the hosts' advantage was short-lived. Davyn Swindells brought the Bearcats back within one with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, making it 3-2 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Lander continued to apply pressure throughout the fourth quarter but was thwarted until, on the Bearcats' eighth shot of the quarter, Sam Van Der Poel tipped the ball into the cage following a scramble in front of the goal to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the extra period, Lander once again started on the front foot and was awarded a penalty corner with about five and a half minutes remaining. Leira Van Tilburg inserted the corner and found a wide-open Bond, who slotted home the game-winner to complete the comeback.

Lander will travel to Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon for a noon matchup.
