Slow Start Sees No. 9 Lander Fall to Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The ninth-ranked Lander field hockey team was held without a shot in the first half as Slippery Rock jumped out to a 2-0 lead, and the Bearcats could never recover as they fell 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Rock scored a goal in each of the first three quarters to open a 3-0 lead. The hosts opened the scoring in the seventh minute before doubling their advantage in the 25th minute, giving the Bearcats a 2-0 halftime deficit for the second time in as many days.

However, there was no comeback in the cards this time, as Slippery Rock added a third goal in the 42nd minute.

Despite the deficit, Lander continued to fight and had the perfect start to the final period. The Blue and Gold were awarded a penalty stroke, which was converted by Mirte Van Roosebeke for the junior's first career goal.

Lander recorded five shots in the fourth quarter, with three on goal, but only Van Roosebeke's penalty stroke found the backboard as Slippery Rock held on for the win.

Lander will open South Atlantic Conference play next Saturday when it travels to face Wingate at 1 p.m.
