Lander Dominates Barton, 8-0, in Home Finale

GREENWOOD - Seven different goal scorers helped the Lander field hockey team cruise to an 8-0 victory over Barton on Saturday morning at Frank Hill Stadium, closing out the regular-season home slate with a dominant offensive performance.

The Bearcats (9-6, 7-4 SAC) controlled the contest from the opening whistle, outshooting the Bulldogs (1-13, 0-11 SAC) by a 45-2 margin. Barton did not record a shot until the fourth quarter, while 15 different Lander players registered at least one shot attempt.

Junior Ollie Bond led the offensive effort with two goals, scoring both in the third quarter to bring her season total to three. The performance also moved Bond into the team lead with 10 points on the season.

Lander scored twice in each quarter, beginning with Puck Hoenderdos' first goal of the season midway through the opening period. Freshman Shannon MacAngus forced a turnover deep in the attacking end before finding Hoenderdos in front of the cage for the finish, giving MacAngus her first career assist.

Freshman Avrie Arnfeldt doubled the advantage a few minutes later, working through a pair of Barton defenders before an attempted pass slipped past the defense and into the cage for her third goal of the season.

The Bearcats continued to build their lead in the second quarter, with sophomore Talia Packham assisting on both goals.

The first came off a penalty corner when Packham inserted the ball to freshman Floor Mulder, whose shot deflected off a defender's stick and into the upper portion of the cage. The goal was Mulder's third of the season, moving her into a five-way tie for the team lead alongside Bond, Arnfeldt, MacAngus and Lily Drijftholt.

Mulder nearly added another goal moments later, but her shot was blocked into the path of Packham, who found freshman Sam Van Der Poel for the finish to send Lander into halftime with a 4-0 advantage.

Bond took over the scoring in the third quarter, beginning with a goal off a penalty corner. After inserting the ball, Bond worked her way toward the near post as the play developed around the circle. Arnfeldt eventually collected the ball and found Bond unmarked for the finish, extending the lead to 5-0.

Bond added her second goal late in the quarter, taking a pass from Hayley Bernhardt and carrying the ball approximately 15 yards toward the cage before finishing the opportunity to give the Bearcats a six-goal cushion.

Freshman Kirsten Schaberg continued the scoring in the fourth quarter, collecting the rebound of her own blocked shot and slipping the ball underneath the diving Barton goalkeeper. It marked Schaberg's second career goal, with both coming against the Bulldogs this season.

Freshman Davyn Swindells capped the scoring with less than a minute remaining, finishing a pass from Van Der Poel to make it 8-0. The final goal matched the program's single-game scoring record, which Lander established in its first meeting with Barton on Oct. 10.

The Bearcats finished with 30 shots on goal, while Drijftholt led the team with seven total shots. Swindells added six attempts, including five on goal, and Packham recorded two assists.

Defensively, Lander held Barton without a shot on goal as goalkeepers Maddie White and Avery Tworkoski combined for the shutout.

Lander will wrap up the regular season Tuesday when the Bearcats travel to face fourth-ranked Newberry at 7 p.m. at Setzler Field.

The Bearcats have also secured a home quarterfinal matchup in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament the following week. Additional details, including the opponent and game time, will be announced following the conclusion of conference play and the release of the tournament bracket.
