Lander Falls to No. 4 Newberry in Regular-Season Finale

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Lander field hockey team held fourth-ranked Newberry scoreless through the first half, but three second-half goals from Finet Heemskerk lifted the Wolves to a 3-0 victory over the Bearcats on Tuesday evening at Setzler Field in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Lander (9-7, 7-5 SAC) entered halftime tied with the Wolves (15-1, 12-0 SAC) despite being held without a shot over the opening 30 minutes. Newberry controlled much of the offensive possession in the first half, outshooting the Bearcats 5-0 and earning five penalty corners.

The Lander defense held firm, however, as freshman goalkeeper Maddie White made two saves in the second quarter to keep the contest scoreless heading into the halftime break.

Newberry wasted little time breaking the deadlock in the second half, needing just 34 seconds to take the lead. Following a pair of penalty corners, Heemskerk finished a pass from Payton Keeler to give the Wolves a 1-0 advantage.

The Bearcats looked to respond immediately, earning two penalty corners in the opening two minutes of the third quarter. Freshman Floor Mulder recorded Lander's first shot of the evening shortly afterward, but her attempt went wide of the cage.

Heemskerk doubled the Newberry advantage in the 42nd minute, finishing a pass from Parker Keeler following another penalty corner to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead heading into the final quarter.

Lander continued searching for an offensive breakthrough in the fourth quarter, earning three penalty corners and generating a shot from senior Leira Van Tilburg, but could not cut into the deficit.

With just under three minutes remaining, Heemskerk completed her second-half hat trick off another assist from Payton Keeler to seal the 3-0 victory for the hosts.

Newberry finished with a 14-4 advantage in shots and a 14-6 edge in penalty corners. Mulder led Lander with two shots, while Van Tilburg and Avrie Arnfeldt recorded one apiece.

In goal, senior Avery Tworkoski and White combined for four saves as the Bearcats held Newberry scoreless for the first 30 minutes before the Wolves pulled away in the second half.

Lander will now turn its attention to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament, where the Bearcats have secured a home quarterfinal matchup next Tuesday at Frank Hill Stadium.

The opponent and game time will be announced later this week following the release of the conference tournament bracket.
