Lander Pulls Away in Second Half for 5-1 Win over Lincoln Memorial

GREENWOOD – A three-goal burst in the third quarter powered the Lander field hockey team past Lincoln Memorial, 5-1, on Tuesday night at Frank Hill Stadium as the Bearcats remained unbeaten and earned their second South Atlantic Conference win of the year.

Four different players found the back of the cage and seven recorded at least one point for the Bearcats (4-0, 2-0 SAC), who are off to their best start in program history.

Graduate midfielder Julia Matthijssen opened the scoring just 2:03 into the contest, knocking home a rebound for her first Lander goal. LMU's Jolie Plaisier equalized minutes later on a breakaway, but the Bearcats reclaimed the lead in the 24th minute when senior Justina Bossa chipped in a cross from Dusty-Rose Miller.

The match broke open in the third quarter, as Lander netted three goals in a span of 3:23. Senior Lauren Punt set up sophomore Puck Hoenderdos in the 34th minute, Matthijssen converted another rebound just over a minute later, and graduate defender Nienke Meima slotted home a pass from Leira Van Tilburg to stretch the lead to 5-1.

From there, the Lander defense clamped down, holding LMU to just four shots after the opening quarter.

Lander outshot the Railsplitters 23-5 overall and earned a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners.

The Bearcats will have a week off before traveling to face Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. Lander returns home Sept. 27 for a matchup with 2024 SAC regular-season champion Newberry at 2 p.m.
