Bond’s Overtime Penalty Stroke Gives Lander Win Over Slippery Rock

GREENWOOD – Freshman Olivia Bond needed just three games to mark her mark. With Lander down a player in overtime, Bond calmly buried a penalty stroke into the left side of the cage to lift the Bearcats to a 3-2 victory over Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon at Frank Hill Stadium.

The win secured Lander's (3-0) best start in program history and improved the Bearcats to 11-5 all-time in overtime contests.

Lander peppered the Rock defense early, firing four first-quarter shots and forcing three saves, but the visitors struck first midway through the second quarter. Nienke Meima answered four minutes later, pouncing on a rebound to tie the match at 1-1 going into halftime.

Slippery Rock reclaimed the lead on a third-quarter breakaway goal by Lucy Hutchinson, and the Rock clung to their 2-1 advantage deep into the fourth quarter. Despite being down a player after a yellow card in the 53rd minute, Lander kept the pressure on and pulled level in the 56th minute when senior Dusty-Rose Miller tucked away a rebound for her first goal of the season and ninth of her career.

The Bearcats weathered two late penalty corners to send the game to overtime, where they again found themselves shorthanded after another card. Lander continued to dictate the pace, earning a pair of corners before being awarded a penalty stroke. Bond stepped up and delivered her first collegiate goal, clinching the Bearcats' second overtime win in as many home games this season.

Lander outshot Slippery Rock 19-10 and held a 14-11 edge in penalty corners. Goalkeeper Isabel Elenga made three saves to improve to 3-0 on the year.

The Bearcats return to conference play Tuesday evening, hosting Lincoln Memorial at 7 p.m. at Frank Hill Stadium.
