Fourth-Quarter Barrage Gives No. 7 Lander 7-0 Win Over Barton

GREENWOOD – It was a night full of sevens as the seventh-ranked Lander field hockey team earned its seventh win of the season with a dominant 7-0 victory over Barton on Tuesday evening (Oct. 7th) in front of a raucous Greek Night crowd at Frank Hill Stadium.

For the first time in program history, the Bearcats did not allow a single shot or penalty corner.

Lander opened the scoring early as a penalty corner from Julia Matthijssen found the sticks of Nienke Meima and Leira Van Tilburg before settling for Victoria Hulst, who fired home the first goal of the night.

Meima doubled the lead in the second quarter, settling a pass from Matthijssen and finishing through traffic to give the Bearcats a 2-0 advantage at the break. Lander held a 10-0 edge in shots through 30 minutes.

Hulst added her second goal of the night just over three minutes into the third quarter, finishing a run off a penalty corner to make it 3-0 heading into the final frame.

The Bearcats exploded for four goals in the fourth quarter. Meima and Lauren Punt scored just over two minutes apart to stretch the lead to five before Ruby Van Den Sigtenhorst tallied her first career goal. Olivia Bond capped off the scoring in the 56th minute.

Lander's 43 total shots set a program record, while the seven goals tied the school mark for the third time in program history and the first since 2022 against Lincoln Memorial.

The Bearcats (7-2, 4-2 SAC) travel to No. 3 Newberry on Saturday for another top-10 matchup. The Wolves handed Lander its first loss of the season in overtime on Sept. 27. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
