#7 Lander’s Late Rally Falls Short Against #3 Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The seventh-ranked Lander Field Hockey team nearly pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback but came up just short in a 3-2 loss to No. 3 Newberry on Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field.

The Wolves scored in the opening five minutes and held a 1-0 lead through halftime despite strong defensive efforts from the Bearcats, including defensive saves by Mirte Van Roosebeke and Victoria Hulst late in the second quarter.

Newberry (10-0, 7-0 SAC) doubled its lead early in the third before Lander responded with a furious push in the final frame. Olivia Bond got the Bearcats on the board just 27 seconds into the fourth, finishing off a penalty corner from Julia Matthijssen. The Wolves answered six minutes later to make it 3-1, but Hulst found the backboard in the 54th minute to pull Lander within one.

Lander (7-3, 4-3 SAC) generated a late scoring opportunity in the closing minutes, but a Leira Van Tilburg shot was turned aside, and Newberry was able to hold on for the win.

The Bearcats return home Tuesday to face Converse at 7 p.m. at Frank Hill Stadium.
