Lander Beats Converse, 2-1

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Lander Field Hockey team needed just 46 seconds to retake the lead after Converse tied the game midway through the fourth quarter, and a clutch late save from Avery Tworkoski sealed a 2-1 Bearcat win on Tuesday night at Frank Hill Stadium.

The victory marks Lander's fifth straight win over their rivals from Spartanburg, all coming after Converse won the first four meetings in the series.

The first half was a tight, scoreless battle with Converse holding a narrow 4-3 edge in shots, but neither team managed to find the backboard.

Lander broke through late in the third quarter when Leira Van Tilburg lofted a shot from the top of the circle over several defenders and the Valkyrie keeper to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute.

Converse equalized just over four minutes into the fourth when Mayla Weissenrieder scored amid a scramble in front of the cage off a penalty corner, tying the contest at 1-1.

The Bearcats wasted no time in answering. On the ensuing corner, Victoria Hulst fired a shot through the legs of the Converse keeper after an assist from Julia Matthijssen, a former Valkyrie, to restore the Lander advantage less than a minute later.

Converse pressed late, but Tworkoski made a key stop in the final minute to preserve the win and earn her third victory of the season in relief of starter Isabel Elenga, who made two first-half saves.

Lander outshot Converse 12-8 and held a 9-8 edge in penalty corners.

With the win, Lander improves to 8-3 overall and 5-3 in SAC play, while Converse drops to 7-4 and 4-3 in league action.

The Bearcats return to action on Saturday at noon, hosting Wingate for Senior Day as the program celebrates its first-ever four-year senior class.
