Miller’s Fourth-Quarter Goal Leads Lander to Senior Day Win

GREENWOOD – After being honored before the game as part of the first-ever four-year senior class in program history, Dusty-Rose Miller found the backboard among a crowd in front of goal to lift the Lander Field Hockey team to a 1-0 win over the Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Frank Hill Stadium.

Outside of the opening minutes, the Bearcats controlled play offensively, outshooting Wingate 13-4 and forcing six saves from the Bulldog keeper.

Miller created multiple scoring chances throughout the game, including a pair of solo efforts in the first half that were pushed wide.

In the fourth quarter, Wingate had what appeared to be a breakaway, but senior captain Victoria Hulst tracked back and won possession to snuff out the attack.

Lander broke through in the 54th minute when a cross from Lauren Punt was deflected away from goal but fell to Miller, who buried the loose ball for the eventual game-winner.

The Lander defense posted its sixth shutout of the season, allowing only one shot on goal, while goalkeepers Isabel Elenga and Avery Tworkoski combined for the clean sheet.

Lander (9-3, 6-3 SAC) will travel to Durham, N.C., on Monday, Oct. 20, to take on Maryville at Jack Katz Stadium — the home of the Duke Blue Devils — before visiting Barton on Tuesday, Oct. 21, for a non-conference matchup.
