#7 Lander Falls 3-2 to Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – Despite outshooting Belmont Abbey 22-3 and holding an 11-1 advantage in penalty corners, the seventh-ranked Lander field hockey team suffered a 3-2 loss to the Crusaders on Friday night at Alumni Field. The defeat marked Lander's first regulation setback of the 2025 season.

The Bearcats controlled much of the first half, firing 11 shots and limiting the Crusaders to one. Belmont Abbey struck first, however, scoring off a penalty corner just before the end of the opening quarter. Lander answered five minutes later when graduate midfielder Julia Matthijssen found the backboard to even the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Lander continued to apply pressure in the second half, generating another 11 shots, but the Crusaders converted a pair of early fourth-quarter goals to take a 3-1 lead.

Senior defender Victoria Hulst cut the deficit in half with under a minute remaining, notching her second goal of the season, but the Bearcats were unable to regain possession in the closing moments as Belmont Abbey held on for the upset.

The Bearcats (6-2, 3-2 SAC) return home Tuesday night to host Barton in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Pushback is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Frank Hill Stadium.
