GREENWOOD - Dusty-Rose Miller (Crisfield, Md.) led the Lander Field Hockey team with two goals and three other Bearcats found the back of the cage as the Blue and Gold cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Coker Cobras on Tuesday evening at Frank Hill Stadium.
The win was Lander's fourth straight in South Atlantic Conference play and put the Bearcats alone at the top of the table at 4-0 in league play, 4-2 overall. The Cobras, meanwhile, fall to 0-5 to start their 2024 campaign.
It took a little bit for Lander to find their offensive footing in the first quarter but Miller broke the ice just shy of the nine-minute mark off an assist from Lauren Punt (Maasdam, Netherlands) to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.
Meredith Wong (San Diego, Ca.) doubled the lead early into the second quarter and it looked like Lander was primed to add on as they outshot the Cobras 11-2 after the goal but nine saves from Coker's Eve Sekscinski kept the Bearcat lead at 2-0 going into halftime.
The third quarter saw Lander add nine more shots and force four more saves until Puck Hoenderdos (Bloemendaal, Netherlands) found the back of the net at the 41:49 mark to give Lander a 3-0 lead.
In the final quarter, the Bearcats iced the game with goals from Hulst just over five minutes in and Miller just over two minutes later.
Avery Tworkoski (Bernville, Pa.) was credited with her third win of the year in net as she made one save in her 30 minutes of action.
Lander now turns their attention to a big South Atlantic Conference matchup on Saturday against the Wingate Bulldogs who sit just behind the Bearcats at 3-1 in league play. That game is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM on the campus of Wingate University.
