Lander Suffers First Conference Loss of Season to Wingate

First Lander Athletics game since Sept. 28th

WINGATE, N.C. - Playing in the first Lander Athletic contest since September 28th, the Lander Field Hockey team struck early but the Wingate Bulldogs answered with a goal in the first quarter and found the eventual game-winner in the third quarter to hand the Bearcats their first South Atlantic Conference loss of the season, 2-1, on Thursday evening at Graham Gill Field.

Lander drops to 4-3 overall and 4-1 in SAC play while Wingate improved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in league play with their fifth straight win.

Lauren Punt (Maasdam, Netherlands) got the Bearcats on the board quickly as she scored off the game's first penalty corner to give the visitors the early 1-0 lead. Although Wingate struck back a few minutes later, Lander was on the front foot the entire first half with eight penalty corners and five shots on goal. Unfortunately, the Bearcats could not find the breakthrough and the game went into halftime tied at one apiece.

Shortly after the halftime break, the Bulldogs found their breakthrough and took a 2-1 lead. From there the Wingate defense was suffocating, only allowing three Lander shots the entire second half and not allowing a conceding a single penalty corner to preserve the lead and the win.

Lander returns to action on Saturday, October 12th as they host the Newberry Wolves at Frank Hill Stadium. That game is set for a 2:00 PM start. This is Lander's first Saturday home game this season.
