GREENWOOD - The Lander Field Hockey team and the Newberry Wolves are no strangers to late drama when they meet up as all four of the prior matchups have had the winning goal scored in the fourth quarter or overtime and Saturday afternoon was no exception. Unfortunately, it was the visiting Wolves who found the late winner and handed Lander their second straight loss by a score of 2-1.
Lander drops to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in South Atlantic Conference play while Newberry improved to 8-1 and 5-1 in league play.
Iris Van Der Does (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) broke the ice just over 11 minutes in as her shot from the top of the circle deflected off a Newberry stick and into the back of the cage to give Lander the 1-0 lead.
However, after a fairly even first quarter, Newberry started to take control of the game as they outshot Lander 14-4 across the final three periods; eventually getting a goal right after the start of the second quarter to tie the game.
The goalkeeping tandem of Avery Tworkoski (Bernville, Pa.) and Isabel Elenga (Hillegom, Netherlands) made seven saves to keep the game tied for most of the second but the Wolves found the winner with just under eight minutes to play.
Lander returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 16) as they travel to Harrogate, Tennessee to face the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters at 5 PM before staying in the Volunteer State to face the Maryville Saints the following day (Oct. 17) at noon.
