Lander Bounces Back with Dominating 4-0 win over Lincoln Memorial

HARROGATE, Tenn. - After dropping a heartbreaker on Saturday to tenth-ranked Newberry, the Lander Field Hockey team responded back in a big way as they defeated the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters, 4-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the LMU Lacrosse Complex.

Lander improved to 7-3 on the season and in SAC play while the Railsplitters fell to 0-14 and 0-10 in SAC play.

The Bearcats wasted no time to get on the front foot as Gwen Vendrig (Harderwijk, Netherlands) would force a great save by LMU goalkeeper Ana Carney within the first 90 seconds. Carney was outstanding on the afternoon as she made 19 saves, including several highlight ones to keep Lander off the board numerous times.

The rebound off the Vendrig shot would result in a penalty corner and Charlotte Van Galen (Bussum, Netherlands) would get a shot off the ensuing restart that was saved but Lander quickly earned another corner that Van Galen would slot home through Carney's legs to give Lander a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the game.

After the restart of play, Lander went right down the field once again and earned another series of corners as they would end the quarter with eight. However, Carney would deny the Bearcats each time.

LMU would get possession back but commit a foul and Philippine Drost (Almelo, Netherlands) took quick advantage and unleash a shot into the top of the cage to double the Bearcat lead to 2-0.

Lander would get three more shots and force two more saves before the end of the quarter but couldn't convert.

In the second quarter, Carney would continue to deny the Bearcats until just under a minute to go when Drost would find Philippine Drost (Almelo, Netherlands) who tipped it past Carney into the cage to give Lander a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

After halftime, the Lander offense would slow down a little bit as they would only get five shots off in the quarter. However, at the 5:30 mark Sara Van Hoijtema (Warmond, Netherlands) would find the back of the cage again to make it 4-0 in favor of the visitors heading into the last quarter of action.

In the final quarter, the Railsplitters started to find some possession as they would get their best opportunities off penalty corners but defensive saves from Lauren Punt (Maasdam, Netherlands) and Merle Vieregge (Düsseldorf, Germany) kept the Railsplitters scoreless for the fourth consecutive meeting between the two teams.

The Lander Field Hockey team returns home on Saturday as they face the Coker Cobras for a 2:00 PM start at Frank Hill Stadium.
