Bearcats Complete Season Sweep over Coker in Dominating Fashion

GREENWOOD - The Lander Field Hockey team scored twice in quick succession in the second quarter and added a third off a penalty stroke in the third while the defense held the Coker Cobras to one shot as the Bearcats cruised to a 3-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Frank Hill Stadium.

Lander improves to 8-3 overall and in SAC play while Coker drops to 1-11 overall and 1-9 in SAC play.

The Blue and Gold were held off the scoreboard for the first 38 minutes of the game despite putting up 15 shots. However, just under the two minute mark, Victoria Hulst would find the ball in a scrum in front of the net and slot it into the back of the cage to give Lander a 1-0 lead. Not even a minute later, Hulst found herself contributing to another goal as she initiated a penalty corner that found the stick of Aniek Vreeken who unleashed a slapshot into the net from the top of the arch to double Lander's lead going into halftime.

The Bearcats wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the third quarter as they would be awarded a penalty stroke which Gwen Vendrig stepped up and inserted into the upper part of the goal to make it 3-0 Bearcats.

Although the Bearcats would be held scoreless the rest of the game, the Lander defense made sure that Coker did not threaten the lead as they only allowed one shot in the first quarter and from there the visitors would never even get a chance as the Bearcats recorded their sixth shutout of the season.

The Lander Field Hockey team returns to action on Tuesday as they travel to North Carolina to take on the Wingate Bulldogs for a 6:00 PM start before heading to Pennsylvania over the weekend to take on nationally-ranked teams in Kutztown and Millersville.
