Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Van Tilburg Nets First Goals of Career as Lander Tops Wingate, 4-1

WINGATE, N.C. - The Lander Field Hockey team picked up another win in dominating fashion on Tuesday evening as they topped the Wingate Bulldogs by a 4-1 scoreline. The Bearcats outshot the Bulldogs 20-2 in the contest and won the penalty corner margin by eight at 10-2.

With the win, Lander improves to 9-3 on the year. The ninth win ties the win total from the inaugural team last year with four regular season games to go. Wingate dropped to 3-11 and 3-9 in SAC play. The win also secured the Blue and Gold a top-four seed in the upcoming SAC Tournament and secured at least a quarterfinal home game on Halloween night.

The Bearcats started the game hot as just over five minutes in, Annika Fuhrmann (Munich, Germany) found Philippine Drost (Almelo, Netherlands) to give Lander a 1-0 lead. That lead would hold all the way until just over nine minutes to go in the second quarter when Wingate tied the game on their first shot of the game.

After that, the Bearcat defense once again locked down, allowing only one more shot from the Bulldogs which was not on target.

The game went into the half tied at one but Victoria Hulst (Maarssen, Netherlands) broke the deadlock almost seven minutes into the second half when she was assisted by Charlotte Van Galen (Bussum, Netherlands) to give Lander a 2-1 lead.

With under a minute to go in the third quarter, a Lander cross would find its way past the sticks of several players from both teams and onto the stick of Leira Van Tilburg (Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands) who slotted home her first goal of her career to give the Blue and Golf a two-goal advantage heading into the final frame.

Van Tilburg would not be satisfied with just one goal, however, as two and a half minutes into the fourth quarter she would lob a shot up and over the Wingate keeper for her second goal of the game and it would give Lander the 4-1 scoreline they would emerge victorious with.

The Lander Field Hockey team ventures out of conference play for the first time this season as they travel to Pennsylvania over the weekend to face a pair of top-ten teams. The Bearcats will face third-ranked Kutztown on Friday and then face eighth ranked Millersville on Sunday. There is a possibility that the Blue and Gold could end the season facing four straight ranked teams as after the weekend trip, they welcome Newberry to Greenwood with the Wolves currently ranked tenth and then end the season with a trip to fourth-ranked Mount Olive.
