No. 4 Lander men’s soccer falls to No. 18 USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG----The No. 18 USC Upstate men's soccer team scored four second half goals and got two goals from David Stanbra en route to a 5-0 victory over previously undefeated and No. 4 ranked Lander Saturday night in Peach Belt Conference soccer action at County University Soccer Stadium.

USC Upstate improves to 4-0-1 on the year and 2-0-0 in the conference, while Lander falls to 5-1-0 on the year and 0-1-0 in the league.  The Bearcats host Anderson Tuesday night.

USC Upstate jumped on top early in the match when Kadian Martin lifted a cross from the left side of the field.  Saul Stoner got a head on the ball and the ball was crossed back in front of the goal when Stanbra put the shot away to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.  The score remained 1-0 at halftime.

Less than four minutes into the second half, Stanbra added his second goal of the night when Desmond Bleau beat his defender and moved from the right towards the center of the box.  His cross found Stanbra and the sophomore put the shot away for his second goal of the night and a 2-0 Spartan lead.  Nick Buxton nailed a free kick from 35 yards out that sailed just over the outstretched arms of Lander keeper Clark McCarthy and under the cross bar to give USC Upstate a 3-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Bleau gave USC Upstate a 4-0 lead in the 58th minute on an assist from David Stovall. Troy Mellanson scored Upstate's final goal in the 86th minute on an assist from Blue.

USC Upstate keeper Ryan Cooper finished with five saves on the night.  Lander played much of the match with just one shot before taking five shots in the last 20 minutes of the match.

USC Upstate outshot Lander, 10-6, and led in corner kicks, 6-4.
