Lander falls 3-0 to Flagler in PBC semifinals

GREENWOOD – In a match that featured nine yellow cards and was fraught with tension throughout, the Lander men's soccer team fell 3-0 to the visiting Flagler Saints in the No. 2 versus No. 3 Peach Belt Conference semifinal match Wednesday night at Van Taylor Stadium.

Though the Saints led 2-0 at halftime, the Bearcats put four shots on net over the first 45 minutes.

The first came in the sixth minute off the left foot of Giacomo Sartori in the box as he gathered Christian Hatley's pass and ripped a shot that was caught by the Flagler keeper, Ryan Rivas.

In the 31st minute, Lucas Lindstrup threw a ball into the penalty area from the right sideline that was headed by a defender and into the lap of Ryosuke Tanaka. Tanaka fired a left-footed shot in the air but it was stopped.

Tal Torgeman tried heading Josh Murray's pass in during the 36th minute but was denied. Mika Lankhof had his chance with one minute left in the half, though Rivas made a tremendous dive to his right to thwart the opportunity.

Hatley and Lankhof had successive chances midway through the second half in the 64th minute – Hatley's came from in close after Tanaka had a shot blocked, and Lankhof's came after he intercepted the clear attempt but was likewise turned away.

Callum Stokes nearly broke through in the 87th minute with a left-footed strike from just outside the box. He forced Rivas to his left, who was again up for the task.

The Bearcats outshot the Saints 18-8 and put seven on target in all.
