Ponds has career night in loss to College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C.----Stephanie Ponds scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds Monday night in a 83-58 non-conference loss to NCAA Division I College of Charleston in John Kresse Arena.

The College of Charleston improves to 4-5 overall, while Lander slips to 4-5.

Ponds connected on 12-of-19 field goals to lead the Lander attack. Tiara Good added 12 points and April McClendon netted 11 points and had six rebounds.

The Lady Cougars were led by Jill Furstenburg and Jade Hughes, who scored 16 and 17 points respectively. Brooke Kotcella added 11 points, while Ashley Scott had 10. Nikki Williams led the College of Charleston with 10 rebounds and Erika Smith grabbed eight.

The Lady Cougars, who led 36-26 at halftime, made 33-of-75 field goals for 44 percent, 7-of-18 three-point attempts (38.9 percent) and 10-of-14 free throws (71.4 percent).

Lander was 23-of-62 from the field (37.1 percent), 4-of-13 from the three-point line (30.8 percent) and 8-of-12 from the free throw line (66.7 percent).

The Lady Bearcats have concluded their pre-Christmas schedule and will open the new year with their Peach Belt Conference opener at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 2 at Francis Marion University.
