Lander Beats Converse for Second Consecutive 1-0 Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second straight game, one goal was all the Lander field hockey team needed to come away with a victory as the Bearcats defeated Converse 1-0 Wednesday evening at Weisiger Stadium.

It was Lander's sixth consecutive win over its rivals from Spartanburg, but only its second regulation road win in the series. The Bearcats now lead the overall series 6-4.

The second quarter was Lander's strongest offensively, and it proved to be the difference in the game.

Lander recorded five shots in the second 15 minutes, and Shannon MacAngus provided the heroics in the 28th minute. A shot by Ollie Bond was kept out by a defensive save, but a scrum in front of the cage followed. MacAngus was tripped up in the scramble but managed to get her stick on the ball and poke it across the goal line through the pile of players to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Bearcat defense once again answered the call in the second half, holding the Valkyries to just one shot over the final two quarters. Maddie White made the save to preserve the lead and record her second shutout of the season.

Lander returns to Frank Hill Stadium on Saturday when it hosts Belmont Abbey at 1 p.m.
