Lander Falls 2-0 to Belmont Abbey

GREENWOOD – The Lander field hockey team had opportunities offensively but could not find the back of the cage, falling 2-0 to Belmont Abbey on a rainy Saturday morning at Frank Hill Stadium.

The game, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., was moved to an 11 a.m. start to avoid incoming weather in the Greenwood area.

Belmont Abbey opened the scoring just shy of the seven-minute mark when Valerie De Bruin broke free for a one-on-one opportunity against Maddie White and lifted the ball over the Lander goalkeeper to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.

Lander had its first strong chance midway through the second quarter, when back-to-back shots from Hayley Bernhardt and Puck Hoenderdos were stopped by Belmont Abbey goalkeeper Lily Willard to keep the Bearcats off the board.

The Bearcats' best opportunity to equalize came in the fourth quarter, when they were awarded a penalty stroke. However, Ollie Bond's attempt was saved by Willard, keeping the Crusaders in front. Belmont Abbey added an insurance goal in the 55th minute, as Sarah Schumacher found the back of the cage off an assist from Isabel Stankiewicz to seal the 2-0 victory.

Lander outshot Belmont Abbey 17-12 and held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal, but Willard finished with seven saves to earn the shutout.

The Bearcats continue their homestand Tuesday when they welcome third-ranked Newberry to Frank Hill Stadium for a 7 p.m. start.
