Field Hockey Game at Coker Suspended; Will Be Completed Later in Season

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Lander field hockey team dominated the opening 30 minutes and grabbed a 1-0 lead over Coker just before halftime, but thunderstorms in the Pee Dee region forced the game to be suspended with 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter Tuesday evening. The two teams will work with the South Atlantic Conference to determine a date to complete the game. The two teams will face off again in Greenwood on Saturday, October 17th.

Lander dominated the first two quarters, earning eight penalty corners to Coker's zero and outshooting the Cobras 6-0. With less than a minute remaining before halftime, a shot by Talia Packham was saved but resulted in a scramble in front of the cage. Hayley Bernhardt poked the ball home for the first goal of her career, giving the Bearcats a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The hosts began to find their rhythm in the third quarter, but Lander's defense continued to hold strong. The Bearcats limited Coker to just one shot through the first 14 minutes, 10 seconds of the period before play was suspended.

Lander returns home on Saturday as they finish non-conference play against Mansfield. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Frank Hill Stadium.
