Lander Topples Wingate 2-0 to Open SAC Play

Box Score WINGATE, N.C. – The Lander field hockey team controlled play for most of the game and used goals in the 23rd and 38th minutes to defeat Wingate 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Graham Gill Field, opening South Atlantic Conference play with a win.

Lander dominated offensively throughout the game, outshooting the Bulldogs 15-6, including a 12-1 advantage in the first half. The Bearcats also forced six saves from the Wingate goalkeeper, while Maddie White needed to make just two saves to record the first shutout of her career.

Lander had a chance to open the scoring within the first five minutes. After a shot by Avrie Arnfeldt was saved, the Bearcats were awarded four consecutive penalty corners and recorded four shots, but all four attempts were blocked to keep the game scoreless.

Lander finally broke through in the second quarter. A penalty corner found Ollie Bond, who connected with Floor Mulder, and Mulder slotted home the first goal of her career to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Van Tilburg doubled the lead seven minutes into the third quarter off another penalty corner, scoring her first goal of the season and first since Oct. 14, 2025, against Converse.

Lander clamped down defensively for the remainder of the game, allowing just three shots in the fourth quarter. Only one was on goal, and White made the save to preserve her shutout.

The win moves Lander to 6-1 all-time against Wingate. The Bearcats won the first three meetings between the programs and have now won the last three.

Lander wraps up its long road trip Tuesday when it travels to Coker for a 1 p.m. start in Hartsville, South Carolina. The Bearcats return home Saturday for their originally scheduled home opener against Mansfield at noon at Frank Hill Stadium.
