Miller’s Brace Sends #7 Lander to SAC Semifinals

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Ruby Van Den Sigtenhorst opened the scoring, and senior Dusty-Rose Miller added goals on each side of halftime as the third-seeded and seventh-ranked Lander Field Hockey team defeated sixth-seeded Lincoln Memorial, 3-0, in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening at Frank Hill Stadium.

With the win, Lander (14-3) advances to the SAC Tournament Semifinals for the third time in the program's four seasons and will face No. 2 seed Belmont Abbey on Friday (Nov. 7) at Newberry's Setzler Field.

The win marked a new program record for victories (14), surpassing the 13-win mark set by the 2023 SAC Championship team. The three goals were also the most Lander has ever scored in a postseason game.

The Bearcats controlled play early, firing nine shots in the opening quarter, but six saves from LMU keeper Cayla Wiggins kept the game scoreless.

Eight minutes into the second quarter, Olivia Bond sent a cross in front that found Van Den Sigtenhorst, who slotted home her second goal of the season to break the deadlock. Just before halftime, Lander earned a penalty corner, and after two initial saves, Miller tapped home her sixth goal of the year to double the lead. Following a lengthy umpire discussion, the goal stood, giving Lander a 2-0 advantage at the break.

Miller added her second of the night midway through the third quarter, finishing a counterattack off a feed from Nienke Meima to make it 3-0 and seal the win.

Goalkeeper Isabel Elenga stopped two shots as the Bearcats posted their sixth straight shutout and eighth of the season, both extending program records.

The SAC Semifinal between Lander and Belmont Abbey is set for Friday at 5 p.m. in Newberry. The other semifinal features top-seeded Newberry against Wingate at 2 p.m. Tournament details, including streaming and ticketing, will be released by the conference.
