FROSTBURG, Md. - Iris Van Der Does (Rotterdam, Netherlands) gave the Lander Field Hockey team a 1-0 lead early in the third quarter but it was not enough as the Mansfield Mountaineers scored two unanswered, including the winner with only five minutes to play, to give the Bearcats their first defeat of the season on Friday evening in a neutral site affair at Bobcat Stadium on the campus of Frostburg State.
Lander dropped to 1-1 on the young season while Mansfield keeps a spotless 3-0 record.
Isabel Elenga (Hillegom, Netherlands) made six saves in the game, tied for second-most in her career.
The first half was a scoreless affair with Lander getting the best of the chances, out-shooting the Mountaineers 4-2.
Right after the start of the second half, the Bearcats were awarded a penalty corner which was recycled after an errant pass and Leira Van Tilburg (Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands) found Van Der Does to break the ice.
However, with under a minute to go in the third quarter, the Mountaineers evened the score on a corner of their own that found its way into the back of the cage amidst the chaos in the circle.
Then with just over four minutes to go in the game, another Mansfield corner was converted on a shot from the top of the circle to give the Mountaineers the lead.
The Bearcats had a couple of more chances to try to level the score but had a shot saved with just over 90 seconds to go to give Mansfield the win.
Lander returns to action on Sunday as they face Frostburg State at noon.
