Punt’s Late Goal, Elenga’s 11 Saves Push Lander Over Wingate; Moves Bearcats to Tie Atop SAC Standings

GREENWOOD - Iris Van Der Does (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) crossed a ball across the shooting circle with under five minutes to play in the match and it found the outreached stick of Lauren Punt (Maasdam, Netherlands) who guided the ball into the back of the cage to give the Lander Field Hockey team a 2-1 win over the Wingate Bulldogs on Tuesday evening at Frank Hill Stadium.

With the win, the fourth straight for the Bearcats, Lander improved to 8-4 overall and 7-2 in South Atlantic Conference play, bringing them tied atop the league standings with Mount Olive. The Bearcats and Trojans are set to battle twice in six days starting this Sunday in North Carolina.

Wingate dropped to 11-4 overall, 9-4 in league play. The Bulldogs currently sit third in the table but have played the most conference games of any team at 12. The next closest teams sit at ten conference games played.

The Bulldogs put 12 shots on target during the game but Isabel Elenga (Hillegom, Netherlands) made a season-high 11 saves to keep Wingate off the board.

Lander opened the scoring in the 25th minute as Victoria Hulst (Maarssen, Netherlands) got the ball from Van Der Does off a penalty corner and the captain slotted it home to give Lander a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

In the third quarter, a series of cards saw Lander play down multiple players for a large portion of the frame. In the 40th minute, chaos in front of net saw the ball sneak past into the goal to tie the game at one. Elenga made five saves in the third quarter alone to keep Wingate at just one goal.

Both teams were held scoreless until the Punt goal in the 56th minute. After that, the Lander defense locked down and never let the Wingate attack cross anywhere near the shooting circle to close out the game.

The Lander Field Hockey team returns to action on Thursday as they travel to Hartsville to take on the Coker Cobras. That game is scheduled for a 6:00 PM first touch.
