GREENWOOD - For the eighth straight season, the Lander women's basketball team has been selected to participate in the NCAA Regionals.
Lander comes into the NCAA Tournament with a record of 22-4 after playing one of the most demanding schedules in Division II this season. The Bearcats also own one of the best records in Division II over the past eight seasons at 190-50, while making the Sweet Sixteen twice, the Elite Eight once, and making the program's first appearance in the Final Four last season. Lander has also won two regular-season Peach Belt Championships and two tournament championships in that time.
The Bearcats will be the number two seed in the Southeast Regional and will take on seventh-seeded Catawba Friday afternoon at 2:30 on the campus of North Georgia. In the series, Lander holds a 3-0 lead over Catawba but has not played the Indians since 2009 when the Bearcats won 77-68.
Lander finished the regular season leading the Peach Belt in scoring (79.7), scoring margin (19.4), assists (478), assist to turnover ratio (1.07), and assists per game (18.4). Their 18.4 assists per game also is second best in all of Division II. Peach Belt Co-Player of the Year Makaila Cange led the conference in scoring at 19.4 points per game while also leading in field-goal percentage (67.3) and offensive rebounds per game (4.6). Her 67.3% shooting percentage is also second in the country. Miriam Recarte also led the PBC in blocked shots (76) and blocked shots per game. Recarte's 2.92 blocked shots per game rank her fifth in Division II.
