Early Run by Georgia College Too Much for Bearcats in 55-51 Setback

GREENWOOD - The Lander women's basketball team could not dig out of an early hole Wednesday night, falling 55-51 to Georgia College at Finis Horne Arena.

The Bearcats (9-17, 7-12 PBC) trailed for more than 34 minutes as Georgia College (11-16, 7-12 PBC) used a strong first-half surge and efficient 3-point shooting to control the tempo.

Lander took its only lead of the night at 4-2 with 4:44 remaining in the opening quarter. From there, Georgia College responded with a decisive run that stretched into the second period, building a 26-10 advantage at the 4:19 mark of the second quarter, its largest lead of the night at 16 points.

Despite the early deficit, the Bearcats stayed within reach behind defensive pressure and second-chance opportunities. Lander forced 20 turnovers and collected 14 steals, converting those takeaways into 17 points. The Bearcats also held edges in fastbreak points (13-4), points in the paint (18-6), and second-chance points (8-4).

However, shooting efficiency proved to be the difference. Lander shot 26.6% (17-of-64) from the field and 4-of-19 from 3-point range, while Georgia College connected on 9-of-18 attempts from beyond the arc. The Bobcats finished at 34% overall and 50% from three-point range.

Quadaija Langley led Lander with 19 points, hitting three 3-pointers and going 6-of-7 from the line. She added six rebounds and three steals. Freshman Lauren Crosland added 10 points off the bench while Trinity Thomas and Alindria Dudley each scored nine points.

Kayla Tilus pulled down nine rebounds, and Lauryn Hunt added eight as Lander finished with 15 offensive boards and 24 defensive.

The Bearcats trimmed the margin to four in the final minutes, but could not complete the comeback as Georgia College secured the road win.

Lander will aim to bounce back Saturday with postseason positioning at stake as it travels to Cochran, Ga., for a 1:30 p.m. conference matchup against Middle Georgia. Middle Georgia enters the contest 16-10 overall and 9-10 in league play, setting up a pivotal road test for the Bearcats.
