Men's soccer faces North Georgia on Wednesday at home

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's soccer team will conclude the regular season with a pair of home games this week, with North Georgia on the docket this Wednesday.

STORYLINES

  • The Bearcats are coming off a 1-0 win at Georgia Southwestern last Saturday.
  • Marco Gueli scored his fourth goal of the season while Tom Marriott recorded his 10th assist.
  • He is also the first Bearcat since Adam Arthur to record 10 or more goals and assists in a single season. Arthur had 15 goals and 11 assists in 2006. 
  • Jacob Withers recorded his 26th career shutout and earned his fourth win of the season with the win at GSW.
  • The Bearcats are looking for a strong finish to their season, as wins against North Georgia and Flagler along with Clayton State going 1-1-0 in its last two games will guarantee Lander the No. 2 seed and an auto bye into the PBC Tournament semifinals.
  • The last time Lander faces North Georgia was back on September 15 to begin conference action. Tied 2-2, Marriott sent a free-kick from the left side of the field to a flying Max McNulty who headed the well-placed cross into the net for the eventual game-winning goal.
  • After starting the year 3-0-0, North Georgia has gone 2-9-1 since then.
  • The Bearcats are still led in goals, assists and points by Marriott. Marriott currently has 13 goals, 10 assists and 36 points in 15 games this season.
  • McNulty is next up in the goals and points category. McNulty is second on the team with 10 goals and 22 points. Gueli is third on the team in points with 16 while Kevin Rubaszewski is fourth with 14.
  • The Bearcats have seen seven players score this season while 11 have recorded at least one point.
  • The Bearcats have scored 37 goals this season, the same amount that North Georgia has conceded. Lander is averaging 2.46 goals per game while the Nighthawks average 2 per game.
  • Lander has allowed 23 goals this season, the third-fewest behind Georgia Southwestern and Young Harris.
  • Among the PBC, Marriott is second behind Flagler's Matteo Costa in goals scored. Costa currently has 15 compared to Marriott's 13. Lander does feature two players in the top-three for assists. Marriott is tied for the conference lead of 10 assists with Geo Rios of Clayton State while Gueli is in third with eight. Marriott leads the PBC in points with 36 and points per game with 2.40.
  • Ranking in the national top-20, Marriott is 6th in the nation in assists per game with 0.67. He's 4th for points per game (2.40), 12th for goals per game (0.87), 18th in shots per game (3.80), 12th in shots on goal per game (2.00), 4th in total assists (10), 6th in total goals (13) and 3rd for total points (36).
  • As a team, the Bearcats are ranked in the top-20 nationally in assists per game (12th), points per game (17th), total assists (8th), total goals (13th) and total points (13th).
  • North Georgia is coming off a 1-0 loss to Flagler in overtime.
  • In their last five games, North Georgia is 0-4-1.
  • North Georgia is led by Donovan Odier and his nine goals. Odier is one of three Nighthawks with 10 or more points. He leads the way with 19 points while Gustavo Alencar and Victor Galterio both have 10 points on the season.
  • Garrett Liles has seen the bulk of action for North Georgia in net this season. He's played and started in 11 contests so far, recording a 4-7-0 record. He's allowed 28 goals, made 48 saves and holds a 2.52 GAA.
  • The Bearcats conclude the regular season with a visit from Flagler on Saturday.
