ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Making its lone regular-season trip to the Sunshine State on Saturday afternoon, the Lander men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the host and No. 24 ranked Flagler Saints in a Peach Belt Conference match.
Flagler limited the Bearcats to four shots today and one on target. The Saints (4-1-4, 4-0-1 PBC) took 15 shots with four of those coming on net as the Bearcats' record dropped to 3-3-2, 2-1-1 PBC.
Each side created four corner-kick chances during the contest. All four of Lander's corners and shots came during the second half as it took some time to gain traction.
Jonah Arszman had a clear look at the net in the 63rd minute after receiving a perfect pass in the box from
Orran Mushet. Arszman's shot went high over the crossbar.
Omar Erwa,
Saviola Blake and
Savvas Chionakis had chances over the final 10 minutes but none could find the equalizer.
The Saints' score came near the end of the first half. A Flagler player booted the ball out of the Saints' defensive half and it bounced high in front of LU keeper,
James Docherty. Docherty initially tried to play it with his foot and decided then to dive on it, but a Flagler attackman gathered the ball and scored into an open net.
Ionas Giovanidis entered the match for the second half and made one save while facing six shots total.
The Blue and Gold will seek a win against USCA at home on Wednesday, Sept. 30 with kick-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
