No. 5 Bearcats set for Wednesday road trip to Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The No. 5-ranked Lander women's basketball team will play at Flagler Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

STORYLINES

  • Lander is trying to extend its best start to a season since the 2010-11 team, which opened the year 23-0. 
  • Kevin Pederson's teams have posted seven winning streaks of at least 10 games since his arrival in 2004-05. Lander has won seven straight to begin this season after winning its final three games of the 2019-20 campaign.
  • Lander has allowed the fewest points through the first seven games of the season (354) in program history, breaking the record set by the 1980-81 team (365).
  • The Bearcats rose to No. 5 in the latest WBCA NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, Lander's highest ranking since entering March of 2011 at No. 6.
  • The Bearcats are 19-4 all-time against the Saints, but three of Flagler's four victories in the series came from 2012-14. Lander has won three straight against Flagler, with its last loss coming on Jan. 11, 2019. The Bearcats have not allowed Flagler to score over 75 points in its last 10 wins over the Saints.
  • All 11 players suiting up for the Bearcats this season are averaging at least three minutes per game.
  • No team has shot over 45.8 percent against the Bearcats this season, including five opponents shooting 33 percent or worse.
  • 48.9 percent of Lander's points this season have been scored by underclassmen. 
  • Lander blocked a season-high six shots against North Georgia on Saturday.
  • Lander has not won its first three road games in a season since 2010-11, when the Bearcats won their first 11 road contests.
  • The Bearcats' last road loss in the month of January came at Flagler in 2019.
  • Lander has used three different starting lineup combinations this season, featuring seven different players. Every player who has seen the floor this season for the Bearcats has scored. Zamiya Passmore (17.2), Makaila Cange (14.4), and Miriam Recarte (12.1) are averaging double figures with two more Bearcats averaging at least 5.0 points per game.
  • Cangé currently leads the PBC in rebounding (12.6 rpg) and field-goal percentage (.649). 
  • Recarte is five blocks away from passing Lorain Truesdale for fifth place on Lander's career blocks list.
  • Recarte has posted four consecutive double-doubles, making her the first Bearcat to do so since 2018.
  • Lander has shot at least 80.0 percent from the free-throw line in each of its last four games, the longest such streak for the Bearcats since a four-game streak from Feb. 15-24, 2018.
  • Wednesday will mark the latest Lander has traveled to Flagler during the season since a meeting on Feb. 3, 2018.
  • Amiaya Melvins netted a season-high 13 points in Saturday's win over North Georgia.
  • Zamiya Passmore's seven assists against the Nighthawks also marked a season high.
