Box Score GREENWOOD – Cierra Kendrick posted a double-double, leading the first-place Lander Lady Bearcats to an 85-60 victory over Peach Belt Conference rival Francis Marion 85-60 Wednesday night in the annual "Think Pink" game at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 18-4 overall and 11-2 in the Peach Belt.
The Patriots fell to 6-16, 3-10.
The purpose of the "Think Pink" game held in conjunction with the American Cancer Society is to help bring awareness to breast cancer. There was free admission for all who wore pink and arrived before halftime.
Kendrick led the Lady Bearcats with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Breshay Johnson also scored 13 points.
Aarika Judge added 11 points for Lander, Ty'hesha Reynolds scored 10 points, and Bre Crum led the team with six assists. Portia McCray added nine points and eight rebounds, Briana Gipson scored nine points, and Ashleigh Zandi also scored nine points while adding four assists.
Camille Dash led Francis Marion with 13 points, Cy'Erra Mills added 12 points and a game-high eight assists, Khayani Chandler scored 10 points, and Alaysia Watts had a game-high 14 rebounds. Mills led the Patriots with eight assists while Dash added six assists.
Lander made 30 of 70 shots from the floor (43 percent), 18 of 28 free throws (64 percent) and seven of 21 from 3-point range (33 percent).
The Patriots made 24 of 72 shots from the floor (33 percent), six of 15 free throws (40 percent) and six of 21 from behind the arc (29 percent).
Each team had 50 rebounds.
Watts hit a 3 to give Francis Marion a 9-5 lead at the 15-minute mark. But Lander went on a 16-2 run to build its first double-digit advantage of the game at 21-11 with 10:39 to go. Johnson tallied six points during the run, Gipson scored twice, Judge made a 3, and Mylea McKenith converted a three-point play.
The lead stayed double digits the rest of the half including a pair of 14-point advantages, 31-17 with 4:13 left on Johnson's basket and 41-27 at the half after Judge nailed a 3 with five seconds to go.
Judge's 3 and McKenith's steal and layup increased Lander's lead to 46-29 in the first minute of the second half.
Crum's put-back matched the 17-point lead at 51-34 with 16:34 left. But the Lady Bearcats went scoreless over the next four minutes and Francis Marion closed within 51-38 on baskets by Chandler and Dash.
Kendrick and McCray each scored inside, restoring Lander's 17-point advantage at 55-38 with 11:30 left.
Watts scored to pull the Patriots within 55-40 just inside the 11-minute mark. But the Lady Bearcats scored the game's next 10 points, building their lead to 65-40 with 7:51 to go. Kayla West rebounded a Reynolds missed 3 and laid it in, Reynolds made two free throws, Kendrick hit one of two free throws and added a basket, and Zandi completed the run with a 3.
Dash and Emily Green scored from behind the arc to cut Francis Marion's deficit to 67-48 with 5:17 to go.
Reynolds scored on a fast-break bucket for a 72-52 lead with 3:25 left. McCray scored on consecutive possessions inside, converting a three-point play after the second basket, as Lander matched its largest lead at 82-57 with one minute to go.
The lead grew to 26 on a Reynolds 3 with 37 seconds left.
