Box Score MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Lander women's basketball team will have little time to celebrate its 70-65 come-from-behind victory in its regular-season finale over Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia College Wednesday night at the Centennial Center.
The Lady Bearcats have to turn right around and host the Bobcats in the first round of the PBC Tournament at 7 p.m., Saturday, in Horne Arena.
Lander, the top seed in the East Division, improves to 23-5 overall and 16-3 in the PBC, while Georgia College, the fourth seed in the West, drops to 14-12, 10-9. The Lander-Georgia College winner on Saturday will advance to the PBC Tournament semifinals at a yet to be determined site.
Senior Aarika Judge scored a game-high 20 points and dished off three assists to lead the Lady Bearcats, while Breshay Johnson added 17 points and four rebounds; Ty'hesha Reynolds 10 points; four assists and five rebounds; and Ashleigh Zandi five rebounds.
Georgia College, which led, 27-26, at halftime, was led by Shanteona Keys and Enisha Donley, who netted 17 and 16 points respectively. Belinda Schaafsma grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
In a first half that featured five ties and seven lead changes, the Bearcats, after being knotted at 15-all with 8:48 left in the half, scored eight unanswered points to post a 23-15 advantage at the 3:36 mark.
GC battled back and used a Donley layup with nine seconds remaining to take a 27-26 halftime lead.
After the third tie in the second half at 34-34, GC held as much as a six-point lead over the next nine minutes until the Bearcats went ahead 61-60 on a pair of Judge free throws with 4:17 left to play.
Lander eased out to a 65-60 lead at 3:12 on a Johnson layup and never trailed the remainder of the game.
Lander connected on 26-of-60 floor shots (43.3 percent), including 7-of-23 threes (30.4 percent), and 11-of-16 foul shots (68.8 percent).
The Bobcats connected on 25-of-58 field goals (43.1 percent), including 6-of-18 three pointers (33.3 percent), and 9-of-13 free throws (69.2 percent).
Georgia College outrebounded Lander, 41-32.
