Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville State women's basketball team scored four unanswered points in the final minute Sunday to claim an 80-77 non-conference victory over Lander at Capel Arena.
Fayetteville State improves to 4-3 overall, while Lander moves to 4-2. The Bearcats will next open the Peach Belt Conference portion of their schedule when they travel to UNC Pembroke for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday, Dec. 5.
The Bearcats Breshay Johnson recorded a double-double with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead Lander. Mylea McKenith added 16 points, Sannayyiah Johnson 12 points, Bre Crum 10 points and seven rebounds, and Sakezia Kelly nine points and seven rebounds.
The Broncos' Doreen Richardson netted a team-best 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Makayla Williams had 14 points, Courtney Best 12 points, and Shamiaya Battle 11 points.
Lander won the battle of the boards, 44-32.
The Bearcats dominated the game early and built up a 17-6 lead with 4:42 left in the first quarter. Fayetteville State cut the margin to 25-19 at the end of the first period and Richardson's three pointer made it 25-22 at 9:38 of the second period.
From there, the game was tied six times before ending 37-37 at halftime.
Lander scored the first five points of the third period on a pair of Breshay Johnson free throws and a Mylea McKenith three to go up 42-37 and led until the Broncos took a 53-52 lead at 3:33 on a Williams' three.
The Bearcats regained the advantage at 54-53 on a Sannayyiah Johnson layup and led the remainder of the period, taking a 63-58 advantage into the final stanza.
Courtney Best tied the game at 68-all on a layup with 5:37 left to play and Fayetteville State went up 69-68 on a Battle free throw.
Sannayyiah Johnson put Lander on top 72-71 on another layup with 3:56 left, but the Broncos tied it again at 73-73 with 3:20 remaining.
Breshay Johnson's layup with 1:20 left boosted the Bearcats for the final time at 77-76, then Fayetteville State closed out the scoring with a Best layup and two Battle foul shots.
The Bearcats connected on 27-of-67 field goals (40.3 percent), including 2-of-15 threes (13.3 percent), and 21-of-32 free throws (65.6 percent).
Fayetteville State was 28-of-57 from the floor (49.1 percent), including 6-of-15 threes (40 percent), and 18-of-25 foul shots (72 percent).
